About Pennsylvania Timber
Pennsylvania is one of the most forested states in the northeastern United States, with approximately 16.7 million acres of forestland — about 58% of the state's total land area. The Pennsylvania Wilds region — encompassing Clinton, Cameron, Potter, Tioga, Elk, and McKean counties in the north-central and northwestern areas — is the largest block of wild land in the eastern US and contains some of the finest Black Cherry timber in the world. The Allegheny National Forest, covering roughly 517,000 acres in the northwest, is one of the most actively harvested national forests in the country, with significant hardwood timber sales that set regional market benchmarks.
Pennsylvania's timber economy is world-famous for one thing above all else: Black Cherry. The northern hardwood forests of the PA Wilds produce Cherry timber with exceptional grain, color, and clear length — attributes that have made Pennsylvania Cherry the standard by which all other North American Cherry is judged. Major furniture manufacturers from across the US and Europe specifically seek PA-origin Black Cherry. Beyond Cherry, the state also produces tremendous volumes of Hard Maple, Yellow Birch, Red Oak, and White Ash. The Allegheny NF region produces significant Red Maple and Black Cherry volume through timber sales. Secondary wood products manufacturing — furniture, flooring, cabinets — is a billion-dollar industry in Pennsylvania.
Log prices in Pennsylvania reflect the premium status of the state's timber. Black Cherry #1 logs have ranged from $500–$1,100/MBF at active mills, with the high end going to large-diameter, clear material from the PA Wilds. Hard Maple and Yellow Birch command $300–$550/MBF from specialty buyers. Red Oak brings $240–$400/MBF with export demand from Atlantic ports providing competition.

Selling Tips for Pennsylvania Loggers
- PA Black Cherry has a national reputation — use it: When selling Cherry from the PA Wilds, explicitly mention the origin to buyers. Pennsylvania Cherry commands a premium because buyers know the timber quality. Log origin matters, and buyers will pay more for documented PA source.
- Allegheny NF timber sales are your price benchmark: The Allegheny National Forest (Warren, Bradford, Elk counties) conducts regular hardwood timber sales. Sale results are posted publicly and give you precise data on what competitive buyers are paying for Cherry, Maple, and Birch per grade.
- Atlantic export markets are accessible: Pennsylvania's Red Oak and White Oak logs can reach export buyers through Philadelphia and Baltimore. Contact hardwood export brokers — if export pricing is running 15–25% above domestic, it's worth the extra logistics coordination.
- Salvage your Ash now: EAB has killed tens of millions of Ash trees in Pennsylvania. Sound salvage Ash in the first 2–3 years post-kill still mills into usable lumber. After that, checking and blue stain rapidly reduce value to near zero. Act quickly on any standing Ash inventory.
- Hard Maple buyers are concentrated in the north: If you're logging in Tioga, Clinton, or Potter counties, you're in prime Hard Maple country. Contact flooring mills and specialty hardwood dealers directly — many prefer to buy directly from loggers to secure their supply.
