About North Carolina Timber
North Carolina has approximately 18.6 million acres of forestland — about 59% of the state's total land area, making it one of the most extensively forested states in the South. The timber base divides into three very distinct physiographic zones: the Mountains in the west, the Piedmont in the middle, and the Coastal Plain in the east. The western Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain counties contain some of the most diverse hardwood forests in North America, including rare species like Black Locust, Basswood, Butternut, and rich mixes of Cherry, Maple, Birch, and Oak. The Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests cover over one million acres in the western mountains.
North Carolina's timber economy is large and highly diverse. The eastern Coastal Plain supports one of the Southeast's largest softwood plantation industries — Weyerhaeuser, Enviva, and other major industrial landowners operate large pine plantations feeding massive integrated mills and pellet plants. The Piedmont hosts a major furniture manufacturing belt that historically anchored hardwood demand (though offshore competition has restructured this industry). The western mountain counties produce specialty hardwoods — Appalachian Cherry, Maple, Walnut, and Birch — sold to high-end furniture makers, instrument manufacturers (guitar tops from mountain curly Maple), and export markets. North Carolina's Port of Wilmington handles significant hardwood and softwood export volume.
Log prices in NC vary significantly by region and species. Western NC Cherry and Maple command $350–$800/MBF at active mills. Piedmont Red Oak and White Oak bring $220–$380/MBF. Eastern pine sawlogs range from $160–$280/MBF for chip-n-saw and sawtimber grades. Specialty items like figured Maple or high-grade Walnut can command premium pricing from instrument and craft manufacturers.

Selling Tips for North Carolina Loggers
- Western NC hardwood should be shopped to multiple buyers: If you're in Haywood, Jackson, Transylvania, or Mitchell counties, you have access to buyers from NC, VA, and TN. Distance from a single dominant buyer means more competition — use it.
- Ask about figured or curly Maple specifically: Instrument manufacturers (guitar, violin, mandolin) pay extraordinary premiums for curly or figured Hard Maple. If any of your maple shows figure in the end grain or face, contact specialty wood dealers before selling to a general sawmill.
- Eastern NC pine has massive industrial buyers but shop thinning markets: If you're managing pine plantations in the coastal plain, compare prices between chip mills, pulp mills, and sawtimber buyers. The spread between chip and chip-n-saw often makes sorting worthwhile.
- Pisgah and Nantahala NF timber sale results are your benchmark: USFS timber sales from the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests set price floors for western NC hardwood species. Review posted sale results before negotiating private timber sales in the mountain counties.
- Port of Wilmington access for export Red Oak: NC Red Oak and White Oak has a well-developed export path through the Port of Wilmington. Contact hardwood export brokers for comparison quotes against domestic mill pricing — export often brings 10–20% more per MBF.
