Buy & Sell Logs in Kentucky
Connect directly with Kentucky loggers, sawmills, and lumber buyers. White Oak, Walnut, Red Oak, Poplar and more — free to list, no commission.
Market note: White Oak stave demand remains elevated — cooperages are restocking ahead of the bourbon production cycle. Black Walnut export buyers are active; veneer-quality logs (18"+ diameter, clean) are moving quickly at premium prices. Red Oak flooring mills are buying selectively at mid-range prices. Ash markets remain soft following regional supply quality decline from emerald ash borer. Full 2026 market outlook →

Buyer’s Field Guide — Kentucky
- Specify grade upfront. Ask for NHLA grade (FAS, F1F2, #1 Common) or USFS log grade (Grade 1–3) to avoid disputes on delivery.
- Confirm scaling method. Most KY sellers use Doyle log rule. Know your scale — Doyle reads low on small logs vs. Scribner or International.
- White Oak stave specs. For cooperage use, confirm ring count (8+ rings/inch) and bolt dimensions (37" bolts, 4"+ face) before purchasing.
- Ask moisture content. Air-dried vs. green lumber significantly affects your drying cost and mill input pricing.
- Know your truck weights. Typical KY log loads run 10–16 tons. Confirm KY DOT axle limits for your haul route before contracting.
- Get multiple quotes. JMLogMarket shows multiple active sellers — compare 2–3 sources before committing on larger purchases.
Maximize Your Load Value — KY Sellers
- Sort veneer logs before you sell. A clean 18"+ Walnut or White Oak log can be worth 3–8x more to a veneer buyer vs. a sawmill. Always separate and price them independently.
- Grade your White Oak for cooperages. Tight-ring stave-bolt wood commands a significant premium. Don’t sell cooperage-quality logs at standard saw-timber prices.
- Post specific listings. Include species, estimated MBF, log count, length/diameter range, and county. Vague listings get fewer calls.
- Ohio River access adds value. Greenup, Boyd, Mason county sellers — mention river access. Opens buyers in Cincinnati, Huntington, and Ashland.
- Time your Poplar sales. Late winter / early spring demand runs higher. Holding a few weeks can add $20–40/MBF on Poplar loads.
- Never accept one offer on premium wood. Veneer mills, export buyers, and domestic sawmills all pay different rates for the same log. Get at least 2–3 bids.

About Kentucky Timber
Kentucky is one of the most timber-productive states in the eastern United States, with approximately 12.4 million acres of forestland — roughly half the state's total land area. The vast majority is privately owned, and hardwood species dominate almost entirely. The Daniel Boone National Forest anchors the eastern highlands, while rolling farm country in the central Bluegrass and river bottoms in the west and north produce some of the finest White Oak and Black Walnut in North America.
The Kentucky timber economy is anchored by several large buyer categories. The bourbon industry creates steady, premium demand for tight-grained White Oak stave bolts — cooperages operate throughout the state and across the Indiana and Tennessee borders. International export markets, particularly in Europe and Asia, actively compete for high-grade Black Walnut and Red Oak veneer logs. Sawmills ranging from large regional operations to dozens of smaller family-run circle mills process millions of board feet of Poplar, Oak, and Maple annually.
Prices in Kentucky vary sharply by species and grade. Veneer-quality Black Walnut regularly commands $1.50–$4.50+ per board foot delivered, depending on diameter and form — while the same log sold as saw timber might bring a fraction of that. White Oak stave bolts for bourbon barrels command premiums over standard flooring-grade logs. Yellow Poplar is the workhorse species — high volume, consistent demand, and reliable pricing from $185–$280/MBF. Cherry and Hard Maple remain specialty markets with strong pricing when clear, large-diameter logs are available.
