Saw logs (sawlogs)
The everyday grade — straight, sound logs a sawmill turns into boards. Most loads on this board are saw logs. Typical delivered range runs about $245–$520/MBF for red oak up to $500–$1,500/MBF for black walnut.
Mill logs
Not a grade of its own — “mill logs” is how buyers describe any log headed to a mill rather than to a veneer or stave plant. In practice a mill-log load is saw-grade and lower, priced on species, diameter, and haul distance.
Veneer logs
The top of the market: large, clean, defect-free logs sliced into thin face veneer. Walnut veneer reaches $3,500–$8,775/MBF and white oak $2,950–$6,775/MBF — several times saw-log money for the same species.
Pallet & tie logs
Low-grade, high-volume material for pallets, crating, and railroad ties. Crooked, knotty, or small logs land here. Expect roughly $115–$250/MBF — it moves on volume, not on price.

Buying timber vs buying logs

Standing timber is trees still in the ground. Buying it means buying stumpage from a landowner and taking on the felling, skidding, and hauling yourself — so it is cheaper per thousand board feet, but you need a crew, insurance, and a written contract.
