Buyer’s Field Guide — Pennsylvania

  • Pennsylvania Cherry is world-class. Large-diameter, high-elevation Cherry from northcentral PA commands export premiums. Specify log origin — Tioga, Clinton, Potter county Cherry is especially valued.
  • Hard Maple grade affects price significantly. Flooring-grade Maple (clear, straight grain, no mineral stain) vs. pallet grade can differ by 2x or more. Ask sellers to describe the logs before traveling to inspect.
  • PA Lumber Scale is Doyle. Most Pennsylvania mills and log buyers use Doyle rule — be explicit about scale if comparing against buyers using different methods.
  • Northcentral PA access can be challenging. Log trucks need to navigate state forest roads with seasonal closures. Confirm access windows in winter and spring mud season.
  • Red Oak export container loads bring premium prices. If buying Red Oak in northcentral or northeastern PA, inquire whether sellers can accumulate a container load — export pricing often exceeds domestic mill prices.
  • Ask about Black Walnut location. Pennsylvania farmland Walnut (south-central PA) tends to be cleaner and larger than forest-grown Walnut from the north. Origin matters for veneer buyers.

Maximize Your Load Value — PA Sellers

  • Cherry is Pennsylvania's crown jewel. Large-diameter Cherry from the Allegheny Plateau commands export prices. Always get quotes from domestic furniture buyers and European export buyers before selling to a local sawmill.
  • Hard Maple flooring grade commands a premium. Sort your Maple by grade before selling — clear, defect-free Maple for flooring brings significantly more than standard saw-timber prices.
  • Red Oak export buyers want sorted loads. European buyers expect sorted, graded loads. If you can accumulate a full container of consistent-grade Red Oak, export pricing is worth pursuing.
  • Northcentral PA logs command location premiums. Logs from Clinton, Lycoming, Tioga, and Potter counties are recognized as premium origin — mention your county in listings.
  • Walnut from south-central PA is high value. Adams, York, Franklin county Walnut from farmland is often open-grown and large-diameter — price it to veneer buyers, not sawmills.
  • Never sell premium Cherry at sawmill prices. Pennsylvania Cherry has an international reputation. Export buyers regularly pay 2-4x sawmill prices for large, clear logs.

About Pennsylvania Timber

Pennsylvania's forests span approximately 17 million acres, making it one of the largest timber-producing states in the eastern United States. The state's northcentral region — the Allegheny Plateau — is considered one of the finest hardwood timber producing areas in the world, particularly for Black Cherry and Hard Maple. Pennsylvania Cherry has an international reputation, actively purchased by both American furniture manufacturers and European export buyers who recognize Pennsylvania as the source of benchmark-quality Cherry timber.

Hard Maple from Pennsylvania's northern tier is highly sought for flooring, butcher block, and sporting goods manufacturing. Red Oak from the northeastern highlands drives significant export container activity, with European buyers regularly contracting loads from Pennsylvania sawyers. White Oak cooperage demand flows from the state's southern counties toward Kentucky and Indiana cooperages. Black Walnut from south-central Pennsylvania farmland produces some of the largest and cleanest veneer-grade logs available in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Pennsylvania's timber market is mature and professionally organized — multiple large export log companies, veneer mills, and industrial sawmills operate throughout the state, creating genuine price competition for quality timber. Sellers in northcentral Pennsylvania, in particular, have access to multiple buyer types who compete actively for Cherry, Maple, and Red Oak. For buyers, Pennsylvania represents one of the most consistent sources of premium Appalachian hardwood in the eastern United States.
