How public timber sales work
How do public timber sales work?
A public agency, such as a national forest, a military base or a state forestry agency, offers a tract of standing timber for sale. It publishes a notice or prospectus with the estimated volume, species, contract terms and bid date. Buyers look over the tract, then submit a sealed bid or bid at an oral auction. The high bidder signs a contract that sets the price, the harvest window and how the logging must be done.
Who can bid on a government timber sale?
Usually any logger, sawmill or timber buyer that meets the sale's requirements. Most sales ask for a bid deposit, and the winner typically posts a performance bond and shows proof of insurance. Each notice lists its own requirements, so read it before you bid.
What do MBF, CCF, Hcf and tons mean?
MBF is a thousand board feet. CCF and Hcf both mean a hundred cubic feet, the unit the Forest Service and many states use. Sales sold by the ton are paid by weight when the wood is scaled at the mill.
Where does this list come from?
The USDA Forest Service's list of advertised national forest timber sales, SAM.gov (the federal contracting site, which carries military and other federal sales) and the Pennsylvania DCNR state forest bid list. We're adding more state programs. Always confirm the details in the official notice before you bid.
Can I list my own timber here?
Yes. Landowners and consulting foresters can list standing timber free on JMLogMarket, and buyers contact them directly with no commission.
